DOTW: The Itchy & Scratchy

Cartoons aren’t what they used to be. It all began to slip when Doug moved to ABC and the Rugrats let the Big Screen go to their head and got ‘All Growed Up.’ Why can’t we go back to the classics, Wile E Coyote & Road Runner, Tom & Jerry, or even the classic twist[ed] Itchy & Scratchy. This brings us to the Drink of the Week: an infused twist on a classic holiday drink.

The Itchy & Scratchy

Ingredients:
– 2 oz. orange tea-infused rum
– 1 – 3 tsps. of homemade Tom & Jerry Mix**
– boiling water (or milk)

Directions:
– pour orange tea-infused rum into coffee mug
– add scoops of homemade Tom & Jerry Mix (to taste)
– slowly pour in hot water, while stirring, to fill the mug
garnish: dash of nutmeg

There are many recipes online for homemade Tom & Jerry Mix. Below I have highlighted the one I started with before I started tweaking it to my liking.

Homemade Tom & Jerry Mix

Ingredients:
– 3 eggs, separated
– pinch of salt
– 1 stick soft butter
– 3.5 cups powdered sugar
– dash of vanilla
– nutmeg and ground cloves (optional)

Directions:
– in a mixer, beat egg white on soft peaks begin to form
– add salt and continue to beat on high until stiff
– put egg whites into a separate bowl
– add the butter to the mixing bowl and beat until soft
– add egg yolks, sugar and vanilla to bowl and continue beating (add spices if desired)
– once batter is smooth, add egg whites to the bowl and continue mixing until batter is smooth again
– store in a clean jar

*batter can last a couple of months in the fridge, a couple of years in the freezer*

This recipe takes a little more work than any of the others but it is truly worth it in the long run. Anyone have any quick recipes (or other ones) for Tom & Jerry mix? Please do share!
